Temporary early closure through 26 June 2026
Leicestershire County Council announced that waste sites would close at 4pm from 24 to 26 June because of extreme heat. This notice automatically hides after the stated period.
Do you need to book Barwell recycling centre?
No appointment is required for a normal household visit. Arrive during the published opening hours and allow enough time to unload before closing.
A free permit is required for vans, pick-ups and cars with trailers. Barwell does not accept asbestos, household chemicals or liquid paint even though those materials require permits at designated disposal locations.
Summer, winter and weekly closure days
Barwell is open on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. It is closed every Thursday and Friday.
Summer: 1 April–30 September
Monday, Saturday and Sunday: 9am–5pm.
Tuesday and Wednesday: 9am–7pm.

Last entry and departure
Vehicles are normally admitted until five minutes before closing. The council recommends arriving at least ten minutes early, and every vehicle must leave by closing time.

Electricals and batteries
Household batteries, lead-acid car batteries, computers, tablets, consoles, mobile phones, small appliances, TVs, monitors, fluorescent tubes, low-energy bulbs, fridges and freezers.
Dry household recycling
Clean cardboard, cartons, paper, food tins, drink cans, foil, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays.
Garden, timber and bulky waste
Garden waste, suitable household wood, chipboard, carpets, mattresses, white goods, furniture and non-recyclable black-bag household waste.
Oils and gas containers
Cooking oil, engine oil and household gas bottles or cylinders can be accepted in their designated areas.
DIY and renovation waste
Hardcore, soil, flat glass and separated plasterboard are accepted, but the free allowance and excess charges apply.
Textiles and footwear
Clean, dry clothes, textiles, shoes and Wellington boots are accepted. Work uniforms, protective clothing and damaged textiles are excluded.
Garden-waste size limit: branches and tree trunks must be cut to less than 15cm wide and less than one metre long.
Plasterboard preparation: remove tiles, timber and other fixtures. Barwell cannot accept demolition waste containing plasterboard mixed with bricks or other material.

Donate reusable items instead of throwing them away

Furniture
Clean household and garden furniture may be reusable. Upholstered furniture must have a compliant fire-safety label.
Bicycles and scooters
Good-quality bikes, scooters and related usable equipment can be directed to the reuse area.
Home-office equipment
Clean, functional non-electrical office furniture and suitable household items can be offered for reuse.
Garden and DIY tools
Handheld or petrol-powered tools, including suitable lawnmowers, may be reusable if clean and in acceptable condition.
Reuse condition: items must be clean, unmodified and free from damage that affects appearance or safe use. Electrical equipment, gas bottles and paint do not belong in the ReHome Zone.
