Sort your Wirral bin problem in a few clicks
Need your bin day, a missed-bin report, a bulky collection, a brown-bin subscription, a food-waste start date or a tip visit? Start with the action you need and use the official button beside that exact step.
This page is built for quick answers, not long reading. It explains the common mistakes first: wrong bin colour, late missed-bin report, extra waste beside the bin, unlisted ERIC items, and van/trailer tip visits without an appointment.
I need to…
Choose the task. Read the one-line rule, then click the official page. This is the fastest route for most Wirral waste searches.
Check your Wirral bin day the safe way
The correct bin day depends on the exact property. Flats, nearby streets and houses on the same road can have different arrangements, so always use the official address checker.
Open the postcode checker
Enter your postcode and select the exact address, flat or property from the results.
Save all dates, not just one
Note the next green non-recyclable date, grey recycling date, brown garden date if subscribed, and food-waste date if the service has started for your address.
Set a reminder for the night before
Bins must be at the kerbside by 7am. Put them out the evening before if your street is collected early.
Check again after service changes
Recheck after bank holidays, route updates, food-waste rollout changes, bad weather or missed collections.
Missed bin: do these checks before reporting
Wirral will not treat every unemptied bin as a missed collection. The bin must have been out correctly, on the right day, with the right contents, and the report must be made in the correct time window.
Check it was the correct collection day
Open the bin-day checker first. If it was not the scheduled date for that bin, it is not a missed collection.
Check the bin was out properly
Wirral asks for bins to be at the kerbside with wheels facing the road, lid down, no extra waste outside the bin, and vehicle access kept clear.
Wait until after 5pm
Do not report earlier. Collections can still happen later in the day.
Report within three working days
If you miss this window, the waste normally waits until the next scheduled collection or you use a tip if suitable.
Wirral bin colours made simple
This is the part new residents often get wrong: in Wirral, green is not recycling. Grey is recycling.
| Container | Use it for | Do not use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Green bin | Household rubbish that cannot be recycled. | Electricals, vapes, paint, asbestos, plasterboard, sharps, commercial waste or recyclable items. |
| Grey recycling bin | Clean paper, card, cardboard, cans, glass bottles and jars, foil, cartons, plastic bottles, tubs and trays. | Food waste, black bags, dirty containers, textiles, batteries, vapes, paint or bulky items. |
| Brown garden bin | Grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, prunings, leaves, weeds, dead flowers and chopped real Christmas trees. | Bagged garden waste, soil, rubble, food waste, animal waste or overfilled/stuck waste. |
| Food-waste caddy | Food scraps, meat, fish, bones, dairy, eggs, bread, fruit, vegetables, rice, pasta, tea bags and plate scrapings. | Packaging, liquids such as milk/oil/liquid fat, or non-food waste. |
Food-waste rollout: when and how to use the caddy
Wirral’s weekly food-waste collection starts in phases from July 2026. Use your own calendar and outdoor caddy sticker for the exact start date at your property.
Check your phase
Official phases begin from Monday 6 July, Monday 27 July and Monday 17 August 2026. The calendar shows your own start date as “Grey food waste – Small grey”.
Watch for delivery
From June, households receive an outdoor caddy, a small kitchen caddy, liners and instructions. Delivery can show as “Container rollout service”.
Use it weekly
Line the kitchen caddy, add food waste, tie the liner handles, place it in the outdoor caddy, lock the handle upright and put it out with your bins.
Get more liners
When you need more liners, tie one on the outdoor caddy handle when putting it out. Wirral says a new roll will be left in the caddy.
ERIC bulky collection: pay once, list everything
ERIC is for household items too large for your bin. Wirral charges £45 per visit for up to six separate items, and items not listed in the booking are not collected.
Check the item is suitable
Typical accepted items include bathroom fittings, bikes, appliances, garden furniture, fridges, ladders, radiators, sofas, tables, TVs, bedroom furniture and mattresses.
List every single item
Do not add extra items on the day. If it is not listed, it will stay behind.
Separate POPs items
Sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, upholstered dining/office chairs, futons, beanbags and cushions may be collected separately by different vehicles.
Choose a safe collection point
Items too heavy, dangerous, soaking wet, sharp, or unsafe for two people to lift may not be collected. Stairs can be assessed on the day.
Change or cancel early
Changes cannot be made less than 24 hours before collection. For Monday collection, changes must be made before 11:30am on the Friday before.
Brown garden waste: cost, permit and common mistakes
Wirral’s brown bin service is paid and for domestic households. The 2026–2027 subscription period runs from 1 June 2026 to 31 May 2027.
| Need | Current official detail | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| One brown bin collection | £63.50 | Cost is the same no matter when you sign up during the year. |
| Each additional bin collected | £34.80 | Use only if you regularly produce more garden waste. |
| New or replacement brown bin | £50.00 | Only available if you are a current subscriber. |
| Payment | Credit or debit card only | Subscribe online and attach the permit when received. |
- Put the brown bin out by 7am.
- Keep the lid fully closed.
- Do not bag garden waste inside or next to the bin.
- Do not squash the waste down; it can get stuck or make the bin too heavy.
- Shake the bin in cold weather if contents may be frozen.
- Store extra garden waste until the next collection.
New, extra, missing or damaged bin: use the correct route
A missing or broken bin is not a missed collection. Use the correct form so the request goes to the right team.
| Problem | What Wirral says | Click after checking |
|---|---|---|
| New green bin | £50.00 from 1 April 2026. | Request a new bin |
| New grey recycling bin | £24.50 from 1 April 2026. | Request a recycling bin |
| Extra bin | Normally for six or more permanent residents, medical waste, or children in nappies. Evidence may be needed. | Check extra-bin criteria |
| Bulk bins for flats | Property must be assessed. 1,100 litre bulk bins cost £120.78 per bin per year to lease from the contractor. | Request bulk-bin assessment |
| Your own purchased bin | It must be wheeled, EN 840 compliant, 140L or 240L, and the correct colour. | Check bin rules |
Wirral recycling centres: cars, vans, trailers and asbestos
Wirral tips are provided by Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority. They accept a range of household materials, but vehicle type matters.
Standard car
You normally do not need a booking unless towing a trailer sized between 2 and 3 metres.
Van or large trailer
Vans of any size and trailers sized between 2 and 3 metres need a free appointment. There is a maximum of 12 booked visits per year for household waste.
Asbestos
Cement-bonded asbestos is by appointment only at selected sites: Bidston, Huyton and Southport. Do not arrive without booking.
Before travelling
Check the MRWA page for live opening times, restrictions, vehicle booking and what the site accepts that day.
Do not put these in the wrong bin
Small items can still cause big problems. Use the correct route before they disappear into a green or grey bin.
| Item | Do not do this | Better route |
|---|---|---|
| Vapes and batteries | Do not put in green or grey bins. | Use a tip, take-back point or proper battery/electrical route. |
| Sharps | Do not put loose needles in household bins. | Your GP or healthcare worker should provide a sharps box and disposal route. |
| Clinical waste | Do not put hazardous clinical waste in normal bins. | Some non-hazardous items can use green bin; infectious/cytotoxic waste needs healthcare advice. |
| Textiles | Do not put clean reusable textiles in the green bin. | Use textile banks for clean, dry clothes, paired shoes, sheets, duvet covers, towels and similar textiles. |
| Paint, chemicals and asbestos | Do not put in green/grey bins or ERIC bulky waste. | Use tip/specialist appointment or permitted disposal guidance. |
Flats, assisted collection and handling problems
Not every household follows the standard wheelie-bin routine. Use the correct support route if normal kerbside presentation is not practical.
Flats and shared bins
If you live in a flat or apartment, your landlord or property management company may control bin arrangements. Shared bulk bins have a separate missed-bin reporting route.
Assisted bin collection
If you cannot put bins out because of ill health or disability and no one else can help, you can apply for assisted collection.
Smaller bin option
The standard bin is 240 litres. Smaller 140 litre bins are the same height but narrower and may be easier to move.
Sacks and boxes
If your waste is collected in sacks or boxes, you stay on a weekly general rubbish and recycling collection service.
