How to read an Edinburgh 2026 bin calendar PDF
The official PDF is useful only after you know it matches your street. Edinburgh calendar PDFs are route-based, so the code matters as much as the weekday.
Search the official street directory first
Enter your street name in the council directory. If the directory is difficult to use or not fully accessible for you, the council directory says to email waste@edinburgh.gov.uk for help.
Check the street record and calendar code
A street record can show a route code such as Thu_1. Do not download a PDF just because it says “Thursday” unless the code also matches your street record.
Understand what the PDF covers
The official 2026 Thu_1 PDF says the collection day is Thursday, green recycling bin and glass box are collected every two weeks, and grey non-recyclable waste is collected every two weeks.
Check food waste separately
The 2026 PDF says food waste collection day can be found on the council website. Do not assume the food caddy follows the grey or green bin dates.
Save the calendar with the code
Rename the file using the street, year and code, for example “My Street – Thu_1 – 2026.” This prevents mixing it with an older 2025 calendar or another route.

Kerbside bins: set-out time and sorting rules
If your property has individual wheelie bins or boxes, put containers where they can be seen from the road by 6am on collection day and bring them back in as soon as possible after collection.
- Put the correct bin, box or caddy out by 6am.
- Keep the bin visible from the road.
- Do not leave the bin on the pavement outside collection days.
- Do not block blind, partially sighted, wheelchair or pushchair users.

Communal bins: flats, shared bins and overflow problems
Communal bins are for households that do not have individual wheelie bins. They are not for business waste, bulky waste or bags left beside containers.
Mixed recycling: green lids
Use for paper, cardboard, cans, tins, drink cartons, clean plastic bottles, pots, tubs, trays, empty aerosols and foil. Put recycling in loose, not bagged.
Paper recycling: blue lids
Use for newspapers, magazines, envelopes, unwanted mail, non-metallic wrapping paper, printed paper, shredded paper and other white paper.
Glass recycling: purple lids
Use for clean glass bottles and jars of all colours, including lids. Do not add plastic bags, light bulbs, ceramics, Pyrex, window panes or broken glass.
Food recycling: grey lids
Use for cooked and uncooked food. Food must be bagged in a compostable liner or carrier bag. Do not add liquids, packaging, animal waste or bedding.
Missed bin in Edinburgh: report only after these checks
A kerbside bin is not classed as missed until after 10pm on the scheduled collection day. Reporting before the day is complete can waste time or be rejected.

Bad weather, access problems and delays
When the whole street is affected by snow, ice, wind, parked cars, roadworks or operational delays, the correct first step is to check delays and follow the council’s disruption advice.
Snow or ice
If your bin was not collected because of severe weather, leave it out if it is safe to do so. The council says it will return as soon as it can.
High winds
In windy weather, place bins in a sheltered spot close to the normal location, but make sure crews can clearly see them.
Blocked streets or bins
Parked vehicles and roadworks can stop trucks reaching kerbside or communal bins. Do not block communal bins with parked cars.
Neighbour support
During severe weather, check whether a neighbour needs help moving bins safely.
Garden waste calendar, permits and brown bins
Edinburgh’s brown garden waste bin is a paid service. A collection date matters only if the property is registered and the bin has a valid visible permit sticker.
Permit cost
The 2025/2026 garden waste permit is listed at £45 for one year. The service year runs from 3 November 2025 to 1 November 2026.
Every two weeks
Brown bins are collected once every two weeks where the service is active and the bin has a valid permit.
Form timeout
The garden waste sign-up form times out after 10 minutes, so have your bank sort code and account details ready before starting.
Phone registration
Edinburgh lists phone registration options: 0131 200 200 option 8 then 1, or 0131 608 1100 option 1 then option 9. Phone lines may be busy.

Do not copy a 2025 festive notice or an old PDF into your 2026 calendar. Edinburgh publishes specific festive collection guidance, and the affected dates can change each year.
Use the festive page
When Christmas approaches, check the council’s festive waste and recycling page rather than relying on search snippets or old calendars.
Do not infer from public holidays
Knowing the public holiday date does not automatically tell you your collection day. Use the official street calendar and festive update.
Christmas trees
Kerbside guidance says Christmas trees should be cut in half and placed beside the brown garden bin in January only.
Phone reminder
Once festive dates are confirmed, put the revised date into your phone calendar and remove old 2025 reminders.
Large items, mattresses, sofas and special uplifts
Large items should not be left beside communal bins, squeezed into wheelie bins, or placed on the pavement without a booking. Edinburgh has a separate bulky uplift service.
Charge per item
The council lists a £5 charge for each individual item uplifted. You do not need to pay if you or a household member receive Council Tax reduction, but other discounts such as single occupancy discount do not count.
Up to five items
Up to five items can be collected per uplift. If a large item must be broken down, each piece can count as a separate item.
Set-out rule
Put booked items on the pavement in front of your property by 7am on collection day. Do not put them out at any other time.
Not everything is accepted
The council cannot uplift garden waste, commercial waste, rubble, building materials, pianos, storage heaters, gas cylinders, asbestos, clinical waste, liquid waste, tyres and several other restricted items.
Assisted collections and replacement bins
Use assisted collection when the household needs ongoing help putting bins out. Use the replacement-bin route when a container is missing or damaged.
Assisted bin collection
- Use this only if all household members cannot put bins out because of disability or a medical condition.
- Do not use it for one missed collection.
- Keep bins accessible and visible for staff.
- Expect collection or return points to change if staffing changes require it.
Request or replace a bin
- Use this for missing or damaged recycling boxes, food waste bins, green wheelie bins or grey wheelie bins.
- For newly built properties, contact the builder first.
- Do not resubmit the same request because this can delay delivery.
- Leave the damaged container out if it is being replaced.
City centre boxes, sacks and mixed collection setups
Some city-centre and World Heritage Site properties have different arrangements, such as red and blue boxes, sacks or communal bins. Do not assume wheelie-bin rules apply.

The city-centre recycling page says certain properties use red and blue boxes because of planning restrictions. Your calendar may not show every service available to every property.
