Find your Sunderland bin day and avoid a missed collection
Use this guide to check Sunderland Council bin collection dates, understand 2026 calendar searches, handle September/March date questions, and know what to do if your bin is not emptied.
This is an independent guide, not Sunderland City Council. It explains official rules in plain English and links to council pages only for live dates, reports, bookings, payment, forms or final confirmation.
Quick answer: Sunderland bin dates are address-based
For Sunderland Council bin collection dates in 2026, use the official postcode checker and select your exact address. There is no safe single citywide September, March, Easter or Christmas table because streets, flats, routes and garden-waste subscriptions can differ.
I need my next bin day
- Open Sunderland’s official bin-day checker.
- Enter your full postcode.
- Select your exact address, not only the street.
- Check green, blue and brown dates separately.
My bin was not emptied
- Check it was out by 7:30am.
- Check the correct bin was out.
- Check the lid was closed and the bin was accessible.
- Report only within the allowed missed-bin window.
I need September or March 2026 dates
- Do not copy a PDF for another street or route.
- Search your address in the checker.
- Use calendar/agenda view if shown.
- Screenshot the result for your phone reminder.
I need a service, not a date
- Use garden waste for brown-bin subscription.
- Use bulky waste for large household items.
- Use request-bin for lost, stolen or damaged bins.
- Use medical or assisted collection if the household qualifies.
How to check your Sunderland Council bin collection calendar
The official checker is the final source because it works from your property. It is especially important for flats, shared bins, rear lanes, new-build addresses, open-plan estates and streets where nearby homes use different collection points.
Open the official bin-day checker
Go to Sunderland’s bin collection day page. The form asks for a postcode and then an address selection.
Enter your postcode carefully
Use the full postcode. If the checker cannot find it, confirm the postcode using Royal Mail or try the council’s Waste and Recycling Public Dashboard.
Select the exact property
Do not use a neighbour’s result unless you are certain both properties share the same route, collection point and bin service.
Read the bin icon, not just the day
Green household waste and blue recycling normally alternate. Brown garden waste appears only where the property has the paid subscription and the service is in season.
Save the result
Take a screenshot or add a phone reminder. Recheck before bank holidays, Christmas/New Year, bad weather and any service disruption notice.

This helper is not a live council search. It gives the correct next step for common Sunderland bin questions using official rules.
September and March 2026 collection dates: why you must check your address
Searches like “Sunderland Council bin collection dates 2026 September” and “September March” usually mean the visitor wants a simple table. The safe answer is: use the address checker, because the official PDF-style calendars are route-specific and can be outdated in search results.
Your property decides the dates
A Thursday route, a Tuesday route, a flat block and a rear-lane property can have different collection patterns. A PDF for one route is not proof for another address.
PDF calendars can appear in search
Official route PDFs may show useful bin icons and month-by-month examples, but some indexed PDFs show older years or route-only details. Use them only after confirming they match your route and year.
March matters for garden waste
Brown-bin garden waste is seasonal. March dates depend on your route and subscription, so do not copy another property’s brown-bin date.
September still alternates
For most standard homes, green and blue alternate, but your exact September sequence depends on whether your route is week one or week two and any published disruption.
Bank holiday, Easter and Christmas bin collections
Holiday collection changes are not always the same each year. Sunderland has published festive changes in past years, but the only safe 2026 answer is to check the live calendar and disruption notice for your address.
| Search intent | Safe answer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Bank holiday | Do not assume the date changes. Some holidays may not affect your collection. | Use the address checker and service disruption page near the holiday. |
| Easter 2026 | Check your exact address before Good Friday/Easter Monday week. | Look for route-specific updates, missed-bin delays or disruption notices. |
| Christmas 2025 | Christmas 2025 had official revised-date advice and recycling reminders. | Use it as a past example only, not as a 2026 schedule. |
| Christmas 2026 | A final Christmas 2026 Sunderland table was not confirmed in accessible official results at this refresh. | Recheck the council website closer to December 2026. |
Sunderland bin not emptied: micro-check before reporting
A bin left behind is not always a missed collection. Sunderland asks several checks first, and the waste calendar may show if the crew recorded contamination, overloading or another issue.
Check the time and reporting window
Do not report too early. Report no earlier than 4pm on the collection day and no later than 24 hours after the scheduled collection day.
Check the bin was out by 7:30am
If the bin was late or placed somewhere different from the normal collection point, it is usually not treated as a council-missed bin.
Check the correct bin was presented
Green household waste and blue recycling alternate. If the wrong bin was out, take it back in and use the next correct collection date.
Check access, lid and weight
The bin should be visible, accessible, not overloaded and the lid should close fully. Side waste is not collected.
Check contamination
If batteries, vapes, rubble, electricals, food waste or other wrong items are inside, the bin may not be emptied. Remove the issue and present next time.
Report only if it was genuinely missed
If it was presented correctly and there is no recorded issue, use the official missed-bin route. Sunderland says it aims to empty genuine missed bins within five working days after the report.
Which Sunderland bin should you use?
Wrong-bin sorting is one of the easiest ways to lose a collection. Use this table before collection morning, especially if your blue recycling bin has been rejected before.
| Container | Use it for | Do not put in | Collection note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green household bin | General household waste that cannot be recycled, such as nappies, plastic film, polystyrene, hard plastic toys, pizza boxes, wallpaper, tissue paper and wrapped light bulbs. | Batteries, vapes, electricals, asbestos, chemicals, gas bottles, rubble, soil, commercial waste, sharps or infectious clinical waste. | Normally alternates with the blue bin. Lid must close fully. |
| Blue recycling bin | Cardboard, food and drink cartons, plastic bottles, plastic food packaging, clean tins, foil, drink cans, aerosols, glass bottles, jars, plain cards and paper in the correct part of the bin. | Plastic bags, batteries, vapes, electricals, textiles, nappies, food waste, garden waste, paint tins, wood, polystyrene, greasy pizza boxes, wrapping paper or dog waste. | Do not bag recycling. Rinse food and drink containers first. |
| Brown garden waste bin | Subscribed garden waste such as grass cuttings, leaves, weeds, flowers, hedge clippings, shrub prunings, twigs and small branches. | Soil, rubble, food waste, plastic bags, packaging, large tree trunks, thick branches, bricks, animal waste or general rubbish. | Paid subscription only. Brown-bin collections are seasonal. |
| Medical waste bin | Non-infectious medical waste such as incontinence pads and bandages after assessment. | Infectious medical waste, sharps, needles or prescription-only medicines. | Collected on the same day as your green household waste bin. |
Choose the right Sunderland bin service
Many “Sunderland Council bin collection” searches are actually about a specific service. Use this chooser so you do not report, pay for or request the wrong thing.
| You need | Use this service | Do not use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Your next date | Bin-day checker or Waste and Recycling Public Dashboard. | Missed-bin reports or service bookings. |
| A missed collection | Missed-bin report within the allowed reporting window. | Late bins, wrong bin, open lid, side waste or contamination. |
| Garden waste | Paid brown-bin garden waste subscription. | Food waste, soil, rubble, thick branches or commercial gardening work. |
| Lost, stolen or damaged bin | Request a new/replacement bin, repair or removal. | A brown bin unless you have a garden waste subscription. |
| Large household item | Bulky waste collection or HWRC booking. | Commercial waste, landlord clearances, hazardous waste or unlisted booked items. |
| Health-related extra waste | Medical waste bin assessment or assisted collection route. | Sharps, infectious clinical waste or medicines. |
Brown garden waste bin: 2026 subscription rules
Garden waste is a paid seasonal service for Sunderland residential properties. It is separate from normal green and blue bin collections.
2026 cost
The current official 2026 garden waste subscription is listed as £40 per brown bin.
Season
The service runs seasonally from March to November. Garden waste collections are suspended outside the stated season.
Sticker rule
Each brown bin needs its own subscription and sticker. Place the sticker under the handles so the crew can see it.
Maximum bins
You can subscribe for up to four brown bins at a property, but every bin needs its own paid subscription.
- Do not put garden waste in plastic bags.
- Do not put soil, rubble, bricks, food waste, packaging, animal waste or general rubbish in the brown bin.
- If your property is too remote or not accessible by collection vehicles, the council may review whether the service is available.
- The subscription is linked to the property and is not transferable to another address.
- If your brown bin is missed and the council is at fault, Sunderland says it will return to empty it rather than refunding the subscription.
Bulky waste collection: what Sunderland will and will not take
Use bulky waste collection for large household items that will not fit in the green or blue bin. It is not a route for trade waste, landlord clearances or hazardous material.
| Rule | What it means | Practical step |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum six items | Sunderland collects up to six items per bulky waste collection from a home address per day. | Count items carefully. A three-piece suite can count as three items. |
| Present from 7:30am | Items should be at the closest safe vehicle access point on the collection day. | Do not put items out days early; it may be treated as fly-tipping. |
| Only booked items | Only the items listed in your booking are expected to be collected. | Amend or cancel before the allowed deadline if your item list changes. |
| Separate vehicle possible | Sofas, suites, upholstered items and electrical equipment may be collected separately on the same day. | Do not assume a second item was missed just because one vehicle collected another item first. |
Sofas, suites and POPs: why bulky items may be collected separately
Sunderland’s POPs guidance explains why upholstered domestic seating is treated differently. POPs are chemicals historically used in fireproofing covers and foams, and soft furnishings that may contain them must be separated and destroyed through the correct route.
Items that may contain POPs
Sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, upholstered dining chairs, home office chairs, stools, footstools, futons, bean bags, floor cushions and similar household seating.
Not the same as ordinary furniture
Mattresses, curtains, blinds and beds are not domestic seating under this guidance. Wooden chairs without cushioning are unlikely to be POPs seating.
Booking tip
When booking bulky waste, list upholstered seating clearly and keep it separate from other items. Sunderland may collect it separately, but still on the same day.
Do not break it up
Do not cut up old sofas or mix upholstery with rubble, wood or general waste. Clear item descriptions help the crew handle it correctly.
Medical waste, extra capacity and assisted collections
Some households need more than a normal bin schedule. Sunderland has separate routes for non-infectious medical waste, larger-bin assessment and assisted collections.
Non-infectious medical waste
Sunderland can provide an additional bin for non-infectious medical waste such as incontinence pads and bandages. It is collected on the same day as the green household waste bin.
Medical bin cannot take
Do not use it for infectious medical waste, sharps or prescription-only medicines. Medicines should go to a pharmacy; sharps and infectious waste need healthcare routes.
Assisted collections
You may qualify if no one in the household can put bins out, or if the sole householder has a short or long-term illness or cannot present and collect bins.
Start time after approval
Approved assisted collections normally start within 14 working days. On collection day, access to the bin must be available from 7:30am, gates unlocked and pets not loose.
New, replacement, repair or removal of bins
Each residential property can normally have one green general waste bin and one blue recycling bin. Some flats and HMOs use shared communal containers instead.
| Situation | Official rule | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Lost or stolen green/blue bin | Replacement green and blue bins are currently provided free of charge if lost or stolen. | Use the online request form and store the replacement safely. |
| Damaged bin | Structurally damaged bins are repaired wherever possible and replaced only if beyond repair. | Request a repair/replacement; expect the council to assess whether repair is possible. |
| New-build property | The developer should supply initial general waste and recycling bins. If not, you can request bins from the council. | Confirm with developer first, then use the official request route if needed. |
| Private rented or housing association home | Your landlord or housing provider should initially provide waste and recycling bins. | Contact the landlord first if bins are missing when you move in. |
| No paper caddy | Sunderland is no longer supplying caddies with recycling bins; paper can go in the main part of the recycling bin. | Put paper loose in the main blue bin if you do not have a caddy. |
