Find your Derby bin day and avoid the common missed-bin traps
Derby City Council bin collection dates depend on your exact address, bin type, festive changes and the new weekly food-waste service. Start with the official bin day checker before putting anything out.
This independent guide turns the council rules into practical steps for black, blue, brown and green containers, missed collections, phone help, Christmas dates, Raynesway booking and shared-bin issues.
Quick answer: Derby bin day, checker, dates and phone number
Derby City Council empties bins Tuesday to Friday, normally from 6:30am to 4pm. Your exact day must be checked by address because the correct container, Christmas arrangements and food-waste rules can change the action you need to take.
If you need your next bin date
- Open Derby’s official secure Bin Day tool.
- Enter your postcode or address.
- Check the exact container due: black, blue, brown or green.
- Put it out after 5pm the evening before or by 6:30am on collection day.
If your bin was not collected today
- Wait until after 4pm.
- Confirm the right bin was due.
- Check for a warning tag, blocked access or open lid.
- Report within 48 hours only if it was genuinely missed.
If you need the phone number
- Use online checker/forms first where possible.
- Call 01332 640000 if online help does not solve it.
- Phone support is Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, except bank holidays.
- 01332 is geographic, not a Freephone 0800 number.
If you searched for 2025 dates
- Use 2025 festive dates only for historical reference.
- Use the 2026/2027 festive page for current Christmas planning.
- Blue and black Christmas-week collections move earlier in 2026.
- Normal service should return from Tuesday 5 January 2027.
How to check Derby City Council bin collection dates
The official Bin Day lookup tool is the safest source for Derby collection dates. SERP pages may explain the process, but your live address result is what matters on collection day.
Open the secure Derby Bin Day tool
Use the official checker instead of copying a calendar from a neighbour, old article or social post.
Search your exact property
Enter the postcode or address and choose the correct property. Flats, HMOs and shared-bin locations can have different arrangements from nearby houses.
Check the container due
Do not put every bin out by habit. Derby uses black, blue, brown and green food-waste routes, and the wrong container may be refused.
Save the next dates
Add reminders to your phone for the evening before collection. Use a separate reminder for green food waste because it is weekly.
Recheck before Christmas, New Year and heat alerts
Festive dates change every year. Derby can also start collections earlier during hot weather, so the night-before presentation rule becomes more important.
30-second Derby bin action checker
This helper is not a live council database. It helps you choose the right next step after checking Derby’s official bin day lookup.
Hot-weather collection alert: why “the night before” matters
Derby’s bin-day page currently shows a hot-weather update saying collections can start at 5:30am while it is cooler and safer for crews. That means a bin put out at 6:20am may already be too late during an early-start period.
- Check the correct bin type the evening before collection.
- Put it out after 5pm the night before if an early-start alert is active.
- Do not wait until the morning during heat alerts.
- Keep green food containers locked to reduce spills and animal access.
- Flatten blue-bin cardboard before hot/windy weather so loose recycling does not blow away.
- Bring bins back in before midday the day after collection.
Derby bin streams in 2026: black, blue, brown and green
The most important 2026 change is the new weekly green food waste service. Brown bins are no longer the food-waste route after 30 March 2026.
| Container | Use for | Do not use for |
|---|---|---|
| Black bin | Non-recyclable household waste such as nappies, sanitary waste, pet waste, wipes, tissues, polystyrene and some non-recyclable plastics. | Recycling, food waste, garden waste, batteries, vapes, electricals, liquids, paints, clinical waste, rubble or bulky items. |
| Blue bin | Dry recycling such as paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, tins, drink cans, glass bottles and jars, and food/drink cartons. | Food waste, garden waste, nappies, textiles, electricals, batteries, liquids, black-bag rubbish or contaminated packaging. |
| Brown bin | Garden waste only from 31 March 2026, such as grass cuttings, leaves, hedge trimmings, flowers, weeds and small branches. | Food waste after 31 March 2026, soil, rubble, turf, plastics, packaging, nappies, sanitary waste, liquid or cooking oil. |
| Green food container | Food waste only: plate scrapings, raw/cooked meat and fish, bones, dairy, bread, rice, pasta, fruit, vegetables, tea bags and coffee grounds. | Packaging, glass, metal, cardboard, soup, milk, cooking oil, garden waste or pet waste. |
Put-out rules: timing, lids, parking and extra recycling
Derby can refuse to return if a container was not presented correctly. Check this section before reporting a missed bin.
Put bins out by 6:30am
Bins should be at the kerbside by 6:30am on collection day, or after 5pm the evening before.
Bring bins back in
Derby says bins should be returned before midday the day after collection. This helps keep pavements clear.
Keep lids fully closed
Bins with open lids, overflowing waste or rubbish placed on top may be refused for safety and litter reasons.
Park so trucks can pass
Bad parking, tight corners, roadworks and blocked streets can stop collection vehicles reaching the bins.
Derby bin not collected: missed-bin decision path
A missed collection report should come after the collection window, not before. Derby collections can run until 4pm, and reports must be made within 48 hours of collections taking place in your street.
Wait until after 4pm
If it is earlier than 4pm, the crew may still be working in your area.
Check the official lookup tool
Confirm the correct collection day and bin type. Do not report the black bin if the blue, brown or green container was due instead.
Check presentation time
If the bin was not out by 6:30am, it may not count as a genuine missed collection.
Look for a tag or sticker
A warning tag usually means the crew found a problem, such as contamination, too-heavy bin, open lid, broken bin, wrong bin or unauthorised extra black bin.
Check access and neighbours
If roadworks, parked vehicles or bad weather blocked the truck, Derby may try again later the same day or in following days. If neighbours were collected, check your own presentation first.
Report within 48 hours
If it was genuinely missed, use the online missed-bin route. Derby aims to return within two working days, usually Tuesday to Friday.
Warning tags and rejected bins: what to fix before the next collection
A rejected bin is not the same as a missed bin. If the crew left a tag, Derby may not return until you fix the problem and present the correct container on the next scheduled date.
| Problem | Why collection may fail | Fix before next time |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong bin out | The crew cannot collect a container that is not due. | Use the bin day checker and put out only the correct bin type. |
| Contaminated blue or brown bin | Wrong items can spoil recycling, garden waste or food waste streams. | Remove incorrect items and use the Recycling Helper if unsure. |
| Too heavy | The bin may be unsafe for workers or the lorry system. | Remove heavy materials and use Raynesway or the right special-waste route. |
| Lid not closed | Open lids can create a health, safety and spillage risk. | Reduce contents so the lid closes fully. |
| Unapproved extra black bin | Derby says only authorised additional black bins are collected. | Request capacity help if eligible; do not buy your own extra black bin elsewhere. |
Derby City Council bin day phone number, opening times and accessibility help
For dates, use the online checker first. For reporting, use the correct online form. Phone support is best when you cannot complete the task online or need accessibility support.
| Need | Best route | Number or timing |
|---|---|---|
| Bin day/date check | Secure Derby Bin Day lookup tool. | Use online first; it is address-specific. |
| Main council phone number | Derby City Council phone support. | 01332 640000, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, except bank holidays. |
| Deaf or hard of hearing contact | Text support listed by Derby. | General text: 07774 333412. Assisted-bin page lists textphone 07490 341 584. |
| In-person self-service | Council House self-service booths. | Council House, Corporation Street, Derby, DE1 2FS; Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. |
| Assisted bin collection | Online application or phone if needed. | Eligibility may apply; renewal reminder every 24 months. |
Assisted bin collections: who should use this route?
Derby says residents may be eligible if they are disabled, recovering from injury, pregnant or temporarily unable to move bins. The crew collects from an agreed spot, empties the bins and returns them at no extra cost.
- Choose one safe collection point where all bins can be kept together.
- Keep the route to and from that point clear.
- Use hard-standing surfaces where possible to avoid grass damage.
- Secure pets on collection day, except assistance dogs.
- Keep the area free of animal fouling.
- Tell Derby if your circumstances change or you move.
- Expect a renewal reminder every 24 months.
- Make sure the bin is still accessible from 6:30am on collection day.
Derby bin collection Christmas and winter schedule
Derby bin collection dates change every year during winter and the festive period. Use the current festive page, not an old “Derby bin collection dates 2025” result.
| Festive rule | 2026/2027 official guidance | Resident action |
|---|---|---|
| Blue and black bins | No collections between 25 December and 1 January. | Plan storage and use the checker near year-end. |
| Christmas-week earlier collections | Tuesday 22 Dec collected Monday 21 Dec; Wednesday 23 Dec collected Tuesday 22 Dec; Thursday 24 Dec collected Wednesday 23 Dec; Friday 25 Dec collected Thursday 24 Dec. | Put the correct bin out the evening before the earlier date. |
| Return to normal | Collections should be back to normal from Tuesday 5 January 2027. | Use the checker if your January date looks unusual. |
| Brown bins | Brown bins are collected less often from November to March, then return to fortnightly from March to October. | Check exact brown-bin dates before putting garden waste out. |
| Festive recycling | Christmas cards can go in the blue bin only if glitter, foil and embellishments are removed. | Remove decorations, flatten cardboard and keep extra recycling visible. |
Green food waste container: weekly collection from 31 March 2026
Derby’s new food waste service is weekly and separate. It does not replace black, blue or brown bins.
What households received
Derby households were supplied with a dark green 23-litre outdoor food waste container and a light grey 5-litre indoor kitchen caddy.
What can go in
Plate scrapings, raw and cooked meat/fish, bones, dairy, bread, rice, pasta, fruit, vegetables, tea bags and coffee grounds can go in.
What must stay out
No packaging, glass, metal, cardboard, soup, milk, cooking oil, garden waste or pet waste.
How to present it
Put it out weekly by 6:30am on your usual collection day. Lock the lid with the handle upright or forward to reduce spills and animal access.
Raynesway booking PDF: when the bin is not the right route
Use Raynesway Household Waste and Recycling Centre when the item does not belong in normal bins, such as bulky waste, awkward DIY waste, electricals or extra materials that would contaminate a household container.
Create or sign in to MiPermit
The official booking PDF starts with the MiPermit booking website. Sign in or create an account before choosing the recycling-centre booking product.
Choose Raynesway and enter vehicle registration
The PDF tells users to go to “Buy Digital Permits,” choose Raynesway and enter the vehicle registration.
Select a date and time slot
Choose Raynesway HWRC as the location. Available time slots are shown in 15-minute intervals.
Enter contact details and accept terms
Select or enter your name, email and telephone number, then read and accept the terms and communications options before finishing.
Bring the confirmation email
The PDF says you will receive a confirmation email and should bring it with you in case staff need to see it.
Bulky waste: prices, refused items and booking mistakes
Bulky waste is for large household items that do not fit in a normal bin, such as sofas, mattresses and fridges. Reuse, donation or Raynesway may be better before paying for collection.
| Bulky waste detail | Current Derby guidance | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 items | £38.85 per collection. | List all items accurately when booking. |
| 4 items | £45.69 per collection. | Consider whether a neighbour also needs a collection to share costs. |
| 5 items | £51.95 per collection. | Do not add unlisted items on the day. |
| 6 items | £57.29 per collection. | If you have more than six items, book another collection. |
| Fridges/freezers | £20 each. | Keep accessible and do not overload the collection point. |
