Kitchen waste and food waste in York

Green bin collection York Council: 2026 garden waste rules
York garden waste is an opt-in paid service. It is not included in council tax, and collection dates normally appear in the waste calendar after you subscribe.
2026 season cost
The 2026 Garden Waste Subscription Scheme costs £52 per green bin. Eligible Council Tax Support or severe mental impairment exemption households can receive a 50% discount on one bin sticker, making it £26.
Collection rhythm and season
Garden waste is collected every 2 weeks during the 2026 season, which runs from 2 March 2026 to 4 December 2026.
Sticker delivery
York says stickers should arrive within 10 working days of payment. Display the sticker clearly on the back of the green bin so the crew can see it.
Bin size and condition
Garden waste must be in a standard 180-litre green domestic wheeled bin issued by the council. York states large 360-litre bins cannot be collected for garden waste because of safety concerns.

Bulky waste collection York Council: prices and set-out rules
Bulky waste is a separate booking, not a normal bin-day collection. Use it for large household items that cannot go in ordinary household waste or recycling containers.
Current listed prices
City of York Council lists £31.50 for 1 to 3 bulky items and £52.50 for 4 to 10 bulky items. More than 10 items or unusually large/heavy items may need an assessment.
Count items correctly
A bed with a base, mattress and headboard can count as 3 separate items. Check the item count before paying.
Put items out before 7am
Bulky collections start at 7am. Put items in an accessible place such as a driveway or garden; do not place them on highways, verges or public spaces.
Keep items dry and accessible
If items become wet or saturated, collection can fail and you may not be eligible for a refund. Locked gates, blocked access and loose dogs can also prevent collection.
York Christmas, bank holiday and annual calendar changes
York updates its annual calendar in early December for the following year and festive changes. This matters because normal “one day later” bank-holiday assumptions can be wrong.
