Check the right South Glos bin day before the 7am deadline
Use this guide to find your South Gloucestershire collection dates, understand the 2026 black-bin change, report a missed collection, and sort recycling boxes, food bins, garden waste and large rubbish correctly.
This page is not South Gloucestershire Council. It explains official public information in plain English and links to council tools only for live lookup, reports, orders, bookings, payments and final confirmation.
Quick start: choose your South Glos bin task
South Gloucestershire’s useful answer is not only “what day is my bin?” You need the exact property calendar, the waste stream due, the 7am set-out rule, and the correct route if your black bin is now on the 3-week cycle.
I need my bin collection dates
- Open the official collection date checker.
- Enter your postcode and select the exact property.
- Read each stream separately: black bin, recycling, food waste and subscribed garden waste.
- Save or print the calendar and set reminders in the South Gloucestershire app if useful.
My bin, box or bag was not collected
- Check the calendar first.
- Check whether it was late, open-lidded, wrongly sorted or linked to an expired garden subscription.
- Report by midday on the second working day after it was due.
- Leave the bin, box or bag out after reporting.
I am struggling with 3-weekly black bins
- Move food waste into the weekly food-bin service.
- Use all recycling boxes, the white bag and blue soft-plastic bags correctly.
- Apply for free nappy or hygiene waste support if eligible.
- Request an extra black bin only if special circumstances apply.
I need rubbish removal
- Use reuse or charity collection if items are still usable.
- Book a large household item collection for bulky domestic items.
- Book a Sort It centre visit for suitable household waste.
- Check any private waste carrier is licensed before handing over rubbish.
How to check South Gloucestershire bin collection dates
Use the official checker for the exact property. This matters because flats with communal bins, new developments, garden subscriptions, nappy/hygiene support and collection changes may not follow the simple pattern your neighbour expects.
Open the official checker
Use South Gloucestershire Council’s collection date page rather than an old PDF, screenshot, Facebook post or neighbour’s calendar.
Enter the postcode and select the exact address
Choose the correct flat, house number or property name. A nearby address can have a different route or communal-bin arrangement.
Read every listed stream
Check black bin, recycling boxes and bags, food bin, subscribed garden bin, and any extra service such as nappy or hygiene waste.
Print, save or app-remind
The council page links to calendar printing, and the South Gloucestershire Council app can send collection reminders and service notifications.
Recheck during heat, Christmas or disruption
Crews may start before 7am during high temperatures, and collections run on most bank holidays except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
How often South Glos bins are collected in 2026
The 2026 change affects black bins only. Weekly food and recycling remain important because they reduce smells, pests and pressure on the black bin.
| Waste stream | Normal frequency | What this means at home |
|---|---|---|
| Recycling boxes, white bag and blue bags | Weekly. | Sort paper/card, glass, plastics/cans/cartons, soft plastics, textiles, batteries and small electricals correctly. |
| Food waste bin | Weekly. | Bag, line or paper-wrap food waste before putting it in the outdoor food bin. |
| Green garden waste bin | Fortnightly if subscribed. | Check subscription status before reporting a missed green bin. |
| Black general waste bin | Three-weekly from 11 May 2026. | Use for non-recyclable waste only. Extra waste beside the bin is not collected. |
| Nappy or hygiene waste bags | Fortnightly if approved. | Use this support route instead of filling the black bin with eligible nappy or hygiene waste. |
2026 three-weekly black bin change: what to do differently
From 11 May 2026, black bins changed from fortnightly to once every 3 weeks. This section converts the official support options into a household action plan.
Use unlimited recycling first
There is no limit to the amount of recycling you can put out, but it must be sorted in council-provided boxes, the white bag and blue bags.
Use the white bag for containers
Plastic bottles, tubs, trays, tins, cans, cartons, empty aerosols and aluminium foil belong in the white recycling bag.
Use blue bags for soft plastics
Crisp packets, wrappers, pouches, sachets, clingfilm and removable film lids go in the blue bags. Tie securely and place filled bags in a recycling box.
Use nappy or hygiene support
Families with children in disposable nappies under 5 can apply for nappy collections. Residents with eligible incontinence or ostomy waste can apply for hygiene waste collections.
Put bins, boxes and bags out correctly
Many missed-bin reports fail because the collection was not legally missed. Use this checklist before collection morning.
- Put bins, boxes and bags out by 7am on collection day.
- During high temperatures, put them out the night before because crews may start before 7am.
- Make sure black and green bin lids are fully closed.
- Do not leave extra waste next to the black bin.
- Tie blue soft-plastic bags securely, ideally with a double knot.
- Stack recycling boxes with the heaviest item on top to prevent litter.
- Use only council-provided recycling boxes and bags for recycling collections.
- Rinse tins, cans, jars, bottles and tubs before recycling them.
- Bag, line or paper-wrap food waste before it goes into the outdoor food bin.
- Put bins, boxes and bags away again as soon as possible after collection.
What goes in each South Gloucestershire bin, box and bag
South Gloucestershire uses a separated system. Good sorting saves space in the 3-week black bin and reduces the chance of stickers or non-collection.
| Container | Put in | Keep out | Micro tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black bin | General waste that cannot be recycled from home or at a recycling centre. | Batteries, vapes, rubble, hardcore, soil, gas canisters and unwanted medicines. | Medicines should go to a pharmacy. The lid must close. |
| Box 1 | Card, paper, newspapers, magazines and envelopes including windowed envelopes. | Metallic wrapping paper, glitter cards and food-contaminated cardboard. | Put shredded paper in a separate plastic bag. |
| Box 2 | Glass bottles and jars. | Broken glass, drinking glasses, ovenware and non-bottle glass. | Remove bottle and jar lids and put the lids in the white recycling bag. |
| White recycling bag | Plastic bottles, tubs and trays, tins, cans, cartons, empty aerosols and aluminium foil. | Black plastic, bioplastic, plastic cutlery and polystyrene. | Squash items and seal the bag so items do not fall out. |
| Blue soft-plastic bags | Plastic bags, wrappers, pouches, sachets, clingfilm and removable film lids. | Pet food pouches and baby food pouches. | Place filled blue bags in one of your recycling boxes for collection. |
| Food bin | Cooked and uncooked food waste, leftovers, peelings, tea bags, coffee grounds, eggshells, pet food and out-of-date food. | Packaging and loose unwrapped food waste. | Use any ordinary plastic bag, compostable liner or paper wrapping. |
| Green garden waste bin | Grass cuttings, leaves, weeds, hedge trimmings, prunings, twigs, small branches, used compost, rabbit/rodent bedding and real Christmas trees under 6ft. | Japanese knotweed, ash dieback waste, logs, stumps, treated wood, most pet waste, soil, rubble and hardcore. | Subscription required; too-heavy bins may be left. |
Quick item route helper
Choose a common item for a safe first route. This tool does not replace the council app or the official Recycle Now item lookup for unusual, hazardous or mixed items.
South Glos bins not collected: report or fix?
A missed collection is reportable only when the correct waste stream was due, the container was prepared correctly and you report inside the deadline.
Missed collection decision helper
This does not submit a report. It helps you decide whether to report, wait, call or correct the container.
Check the official calendar again
Confirm the collection was due for your exact address and waste stream. Garden waste also depends on active subscription status.
Check refusal reasons
Late set-out, open lid, wrong sorting, expired garden subscription, unlined food waste, unsafe containers or incorrectly prepared boxes can stop collection.
Report before the deadline
Report no later than midday on the second working day after the collection was due. Online reporting needs a South Gloucestershire Council account.
Leave it out after reporting
The council aims to return no later than midday the day after reporting, and where possible by 5pm on the day you report.
Use phone help for communal flats
If you live in a flat with communal recycling bins, do not report online. Call 01454 868000.
Sticker, contamination or unsafe container: what it means
South Gloucestershire’s “what we can’t collect” guidance explains why recycling or waste may be left behind. Treat a sticker as an instruction, not as a normal missed collection.
Incorrect or unsafe items
Examples include drinking glasses, black plastic, plant pots, broken glass, gas canisters, needles, loose small appliance batteries and vapes.
Food contamination
Food-stained takeaway boxes, jars/tubs/bottles not emptied and rinsed, or wet textiles can stop recycling from being collected.
Unsafe containers
Use the boxes and bags provided by the council. The council warns not to use your own recycling containers.
Unlined food bin
Loose food waste makes bins harder to empty and can spill. Bag it, use a compostable liner or wrap it in paper.
Order bins, recycling boxes, bags and extra capacity
Order the right container through the right route. Some items are free, while extra black bins and extra green bins have separate rules.
| Need | Official rule | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Replacement or extra recycling boxes / white recycling bag | Can be ordered free of charge. | Sign in to your council account, visit a One Stop Shop or call 01454 868000. |
| Blue bags for soft plastics | Can be ordered free of charge. | Tie filled bags securely and place them in a recycling box for collection. |
| Damaged black or green bin | Leave the empty damaged bin where you normally put it out. The council aims to visit within 10 working days. | They may repair lid/wheels first; if not repairable, they remove and replace it. |
| Extra green garden bin | Do not use the normal bin order form. | Use the garden waste subscription route for another paid green bin. |
| Extra black bin | Only one black bin per household unless special circumstances apply. | Use food waste, recycling, nappy/hygiene services first; apply for extra capacity only if genuinely eligible. |
| Flats, HMOs or churches | The normal online order route is not available. | Call 01454 868000 to submit the request. |
Garden waste: green bin, sacks and subscription rules
Garden waste must not go in the black bin. Use a subscribed green bin, one-off garden sacks, home composting or a Sort It centre.
Green-bin subscription
The garden waste subscription costs £75 per green bin for a year, or £37.50 per bin for residents receiving qualifying benefits. Collections are fortnightly.
How to apply or renew
You need a South Gloucestershire Council account, a debit or credit card, and your National Insurance number if claiming a discount. Renewals cannot be made more than 6 weeks before expiry.
One-off garden sacks
Garden waste sacks cost £3.30 each and can be collected fortnightly on the same day as green bins if requested at least 24 hours in advance.
Keep out of green waste
Do not use green waste routes for Japanese knotweed, ash dieback waste, large logs, tree stumps, treated wood, most pet waste, soil, rubble or hardcore.
South Glos rubbish removal: bulky items, reuse, Sort It or private carrier?
“Rubbish removal” can mean several different legal routes. Use the route that matches the item and keep evidence if a private collector takes your waste.
| Route | Use it for | Cost / warning |
|---|---|---|
| Large household item collection | Furniture, domestic fridges/freezers, washing machines, mattresses and electrical items that you would normally take when moving house. | £41.90 for up to 3 items, or £20.95 with qualifying benefits. |
| Reuse or charity collection | Good-condition furniture and reusable household items. | Often free or low-cost; check condition and fire-label rules before booking. |
| Sort It recycling centre | DIY waste, mattresses, carpets, electricals, restricted household waste and extra recycling. | Book a slot first. DIY limits and vehicle rules apply. |
| Private waste collector | Large clearances, builder’s waste, house clearances or items outside council routes. | Check waste-carrier registration, disposal site, receipt, vehicle registration and written quote. |
| Not council large-item collection | Fixtures, fittings, building waste, sheeting used to cover items and sheds. | Use a legal contractor, skip, hippo bag or allowed recycling-centre route. |
Sort It recycling centres: booking, restricted vehicles and DIY limits
South Gloucestershire residents must book before using Sort It centres. The rules are strict because centres are for household waste, not business or tradesperson waste.
Book before visiting
You must be a South Gloucestershire resident and have a booked timeslot. Same-day slots may be available, and bookings can be made up to 2 weeks ahead.
Vehicle rules
Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are not allowed. Some vans, pickups, flatbeds, adapted vehicles and vehicles without rear seats/windows count as restricted and need a permit.
DIY waste limits
DIY waste is limited. Recycling centre terms describe 100 litres per visit, around 6 bags, a car boot load or a bathroom suite, with a maximum of 4 DIY visits in 4 weeks.
Current material warnings
The booking page says fridges/freezers and lead-acid batteries may be temporarily unavailable because of disposal capacity or site-capacity issues. Check before loading.
| Centre / route | Useful note | Before you go |
|---|---|---|
| Little Stoke | No trailers or large vehicles; no asbestos, tyres, plasterboard, rubble/hardcore, paper, cans, glass or plastics facilities listed for the site. | Check the live centre page before loading DIY or restricted waste. |
| Yate, Mangotsfield, Thornbury and other suitable centres | Some centres accept wider materials such as plasterboard, rubble, tyres, hazardous waste in small quantities and reusable items. | Read the material list for the specific site before booking. |
| Business or commercial waste | Not accepted as household waste, including waste produced by a business or tradesperson working in your home. | Use the commercial waste disposal route instead. |
Official PDF audit: where South Glos waste goes
The official “Where our waste goes 2025/2026” PDF shows why sorting matters. Different materials are processed through different reuse, recycling, composting, hazardous, autoclave and recovery routes after collection.
Paper and cardboard
The PDF lists cardboard and hard mixed papers as recycled through materials-recovery and paper-processing routes. Keep paper and card dry and clean.
Glass packaging
Glass packaging is listed as a separate recycled stream. Keep glass bottles and jars in Box 2 and put lids in the white recycling bag.
Green waste
Green waste is listed as composted, not treated as general rubbish. Do not mix soil, rubble, hardcore or invasive plant material into garden waste.
Clinical and hazardous routes
Clinical, offensive and hazardous items have controlled treatment or disposal routes. Do not hide sharps, medicines, batteries, asbestos or chemicals in household bins.
