Confirm the colour due
Blue is paper/card, brown is mixed recycling, green is garden waste, and grey is general waste. The calendar decides which one is due on your street.

Blue, brown, green and grey bin rules
Barnsley sends different waste streams to different processors. If the wrong item goes in the wrong bin, the bin can be tagged and left until you remove the problem item.

Quick item route checker
Put your bin out correctly: 6am, lid closed, not too heavy
Barnsley says bins should be at the kerbside or agreed collection point before 6am on collection day. You can put a bin out from 12pm the day before, but you should not block the pavement or road.
Collection morning
Have the correct bin out before 6am. If you put it out late, do not report it as a missed bin.
Weight limit
Barnsley says the bin-lorry lifting mechanism has a maximum weight limit of 50kg. Heavy bins can be tagged and left.
Bring it back
After collection, remove the bin from the kerbside or collection point by 12pm the day after it was emptied.
Tag warning
Damage, overfilling, excessive weight and wrong items can lead to a tag. Fix the issue before the next scheduled collection.
- Put the bin at the kerbside or agreed collection point.
- Close the lid fully.
- Remove liners from the lip of the bin.
- Do not squash in extra waste so the lid cannot close.
- Keep handles facing the road where practical.
- Keep the bin secure in bad weather.
- Loosen compacted or frozen waste before the next collection.
- Do not expect crews to loosen stuck waste or shake the bin repeatedly.
Missed bin: check if Barnsley will accept the report
Barnsley separates street-wide service problems from individual missed bins. If neighbours were collected but only your bin was missed, Barnsley says they cannot return to collect an individual bin.

Replacement wheelie bins, charges and delivery rules
Use the replacement-bin route only for the right reason. Barnsley says all standard bins are 240 litres, 1063mm high and 720mm wide, and new or replacement bins cannot be ordered over the phone.

Extra grey, blue or brown bins for larger households
Extra capacity is not automatic. Barnsley says households with six or more permanent residents can apply if they are fully using their recycling bins but still have too much waste.

There must be six or more people permanently living at the property.
Extra grey bin charge
Applying for an extra grey bin costs £45. Extra blue or brown bin applications do not have a charge.
Evidence needed
Evidence can include recent bank/credit-card statements, utility bills, Child Benefit award letters, student bank statements or university attendance letters showing the address.
What happens next
Barnsley may visit, check how the household uses existing bins, then either deliver an extra bin, advise better bin use, or refund the £45 if the extra grey bin is refused.
Food waste bins in Barnsley: why the rule is different
People often search for Barnsley food waste bins because other councils use kitchen caddies. Barnsley’s official advice is different: residents are not required to separate food waste at this time.
Where food waste goes
Food waste goes in the grey general-waste bin. Do not put food waste, tea bags or coffee grounds in the green garden-waste bin.
Transitional arrangement
Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham have a Defra-approved transitional arrangement allowing current collections to continue until 2040.

The BDR Waste Treatment Facility processes residual waste, recovers recyclable materials, creates fuel for energy and treats food waste through anaerobic digestion.

Green bin garden waste: March to November only
Barnsley’s green bin is for garden waste, but collections are seasonal. There are no green-bin collections in December, January or February.

Assisted bin collections: help if you cannot put bins out
Assisted collections are for residents who cannot safely put bins out and have nobody else at the property or within the same property grounds who can do it.
Age route
You may qualify if you are aged 80 or over and nobody else at the property can put bins out.
Medical or disability route
You may qualify if a disability, medical condition or physical limitation prevents you from putting bins out. Evidence may be required.
Risk assessment
Barnsley may check visible risks, pets, distance to the collection point, underfoot conditions and lighting.

New, empty, rented or new-build property bin steps
New addresses and empty properties create different problems: the property might not be on a collection round yet, or it may be missing bins that should have been supplied by a builder or landlord.
Check if the address already has a round
Use the bin-day checker first. If the property already appears, follow the shown collection calendar.
Ask for a new collection if no round exists
If the property is not on a collection round, Barnsley’s “ask for a new bin collection” form adds the property to a bin collection round.
Order missing bins only after checking who is responsible
If the property is new build or privately rented, Barnsley says you should speak to the builder or landlord before placing an order with the council.

When waste cannot go in a wheelie bin
Large, hazardous, electrical, DIY or bulky items usually need a separate route. Do not force these into the grey bin or leave them next to a wheelie bin.
Household waste recycling centres
Barnsley’s waste hub lists household waste recycling centres and related passes, accepted items and FAQs. Use this route for suitable household items that cannot wait for a wheelie-bin collection.
Bulky waste
Barnsley’s bulky service can collect many standard large items, including chairs, sofas, mattresses, TVs, domestic fridges/freezers, washing machines and tied bundles of wood.
Bulky waste charges
Standard bulky collection charges are £28 for up to two standard-list items, plus £8.75 for each additional standard item up to a maximum of 12.
Non-standard items
If the item is not on Barnsley’s standard list, if there are more than 12 items, or if the request is from a landlord or business, Barnsley says it will email a quote.
Hazardous waste, batteries and vapes: do not put these in bins
Hazardous does not always mean toxic; it means the item may harm people or the environment. Barnsley lists asbestos, paints, chemicals, cleaning products, batteries, TVs and fridges as examples of hazardous waste.
