Fix your Brent bin question without reading a council maze
Brent waste collection depends on your exact address, property type and waste stream. A house, a block of flats, a flat above a shop, a timed collection street and a North Circular property can all have different rules.

Use Brent’s official WasteWorks lookup before making any decision. Recycling and food waste are collected weekly, while general rubbish is normally every two weeks, but your exact collection can vary by address and property type. Put bins, sacks or containers out by 7am on collection day unless Brent has posted a temporary earlier start alert.

Before collection morning
- Put bins or sacks out by 7am, or follow a live Brent alert if earlier.
- Keep lids shut. Excess rubbish beside the bin is not collected.
- Put containers as close to the street as possible without blocking pavement.
- Do not put batteries, vapes or electricals in any normal bin.

Do not copy a neighbour’s bin day. Brent’s system checks your exact address, and the answer can change by waste type.

Check every stream
Look for paper/cardboard, other recycling, general waste, food waste and garden waste if you subscribe.
Put bins out by 7am
Put bins out the night before if you might forget. If Brent posts a temporary weather or service alert, follow that alert.
Put bins in the right place
Use the front of your drive/path or as close to the street as possible. Do not block the pavement.
Bring bins back after collection
Keep bins within your property boundary at all other times unless your property has a different Brent arrangement.
Missed bin: report only after the right checks
Brent says your bin or sack can be collected any time up to 10pm on the due day. Reporting before then is too early.
Before 10pm: wait
The crew may still collect later in the day. Do not report a missed bin before 10pm.
After 10pm: check if it qualified
Make sure it was out by 7am, on the correct day, in the correct position, not overfilled and not contaminated.
Report within 2 days
If the bin was correctly presented and still not collected, report it within 2 days after the due collection day.
Leave it accessible if Brent says return is due
Brent aims to collect qualifying missed bins within 24 hours of the report. Keep the bin out only if it is safe and allowed.
Why Brent may not collect your bin
Use this before submitting a missed-bin report. It helps you know whether Brent is likely to return.

Your property type changes the rule
Brent waste collection is not one-size-fits-all. Pick your property type first.
House or house converted into flats
You should normally have a blue-lidded recycling bin, blue sack for paper/cardboard, grey general rubbish bin, food waste caddy and a green garden bin only if you pay for the service.
Block of flats
You should have communal recycling and general rubbish bins. Most, but not all, blocks have communal food waste bins. Communal bins are collected weekly.
Flat above a shop
You may receive clear recycling bags and a letter telling you where and when to put them out. Brent does not normally provide food waste caddies for these properties.
Timed collection area
Rubbish and recycling must be put out only between 6pm and 6.30am at the designated collection point.
North Circular A406 property
Some houses on the North Circular use bags instead of bins. General rubbish should go in black bags and is collected daily, five days a week.

Food waste: avoid the packaging mistake
Food waste is collected every week in Brent. The biggest contamination problem is packaging or plastic bags in the caddy.
Yes: food only
Fruit and vegetable waste, fallen fruit, food scraps, bread, cheese, egg shells, tea bags, coffee grounds, pasta and rice.
No: packaging and non-food
No plastic, garden waste, household waste, soil, stones, rubble, pet waste, nappies, kitchen towel or tissues.
Garden waste: subscription, sticker and renewal
Garden waste is a paid Brent service. A green garden bin without a valid sticker may not be collected.
Price
The standard garden waste service is £69 per year. A 20% discount may apply for residents receiving Council Tax benefit or Pension Credit guarantee credit, making the discounted rate £55.20.
Collection pattern
Garden waste is collected every 2 weeks from March to November and once a month from December to February.
Sticker rule
The sticker must be attached to the bin you intend to use and visible from the road. If there is no valid sticker, the bin may not be emptied.
Renewal rule
The service runs 1 April to 31 March. Renew before 1 April and allow time for the new sticker to arrive.
Bulky waste: book only what Brent will collect
Use bulky waste collection for large household items that are too big for your bin. Do not use it for builders’ waste, rubble or DIY bathroom/kitchen items.

Free small-items collection: use it before using the bin
Batteries, vapes and electricals should never be hidden in normal bins. Brent’s small-items collection covers several useful categories.
Textiles
Clean clothes, shoes and textiles can be collected within the service limits. Bedding and dirty textiles are not accepted.
Small electricals
Items such as kettles, irons, blenders, laptops, phones, games consoles, hair dryers and cables can be booked. Remove batteries and SIM cards.
Household batteries
Use the small-items route for domestic handheld batteries within Brent’s limits. Large batteries, car batteries, e-bike/e-scooter batteries and vapes need another route.
Household paint
Sealed gloss and emulsion paint can be booked within Brent’s limits. Trade paint, solvents, stains, creosotes, varnishes and unsealed tins are not accepted.
Abbey Road: when normal Brent collection is not enough
Abbey Road Household Reuse and Recycling Centre is for Brent residents who need to recycle or dispose of bulky items and general household rubbish. Pre-booking is not necessary, but Brent says it is advisable.
Most household waste
Most household waste can be disposed of free of charge. Cars are allowed on site for a maximum of 30 minutes, so sort materials before you go.
DIY free allowance
Each household has a limited allowance: one visit per week with either two 50L DIY waste bags that can be safely carried, or one single unbagged bulky waste item.
Chargeable excess waste
Excess DIY waste, oversized DIY waste and chargeable construction/demolition materials can be weighed and charged. Payment is card-only for chargeable items.
Opening pattern
Abbey Road is listed as open Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday 8am–4pm, and closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
