Use the postcode checker first
Enter your postcode on Hull’s official bin checker. If you see “invalid postcode” or “no council collections,” check that the postcode is inside Hull City Council’s area and that you selected the correct property.
Read the colour shown for each date
Do not assume a fixed pattern from last month. The checker shows the actual upcoming dates for the address and the bin colour due.

Many users search for a Hull bin collection dates map. For a household, the address checker is more useful than a general map because it confirms the selected property’s upcoming collections.
For exact dates
Use the official bin checker. It is the best route for individual addresses, flats, shared blocks, communal properties and streets with different access arrangements.

Collection times: 7am boundary rule and common access problems
Hull lists collection rounds between 7am and 4:30pm for scheduled bin services. The safest habit is to present the correct container by 7am and not assume the lorry will arrive at the same time every week.
Set-out deadline
Put due bins at the boundary of your property by 7am, with handles facing the road where Hull’s service page says this applies.
Collection window
A later-than-usual lorry does not mean the bin is missed. Wait until the correct reporting time before using the missed-bin form.
After emptying
Return bins to your property as soon as possible. Number your bins so they are not mistaken for neighbours’ bins.
Access issues
If you use a tenfoot, shared storage area, rear access route or communal bin area, follow the property-specific route shown by Hull rather than copying another street.
- Put the correct bin out, not every bin.
- Close the lid fully.
- Keep the bin where the crew can reach it safely.
- Do not block pavements, driveways or road access.
- Do not overload with soil, rubble or heavy DIY waste.
- Do not leave black-bin or brown-bin side waste.
- Use clear bags only for allowed extra blue-bin recycling side waste.
Blue, brown, food caddy and black bin rules
Hull’s 2026 household system is easier when you separate it into three jobs: blue for loose clean dry recycling, brown/caddy for food and garden waste, and black for household waste Hull does not recycle.

Hull’s recycling-right PDF gives a clear rule for blue bins: only listed items, loose in the bin, clean enough to sort, and not mixed with food waste, nappies, clothes or bagged waste.
No bagged recycling
Do not put blue-bin recycling inside carrier bags, black bags or other bin bags. Bagged blue-bin recycling can lead to the bin not being emptied.
Rinse food containers
Tip food residue into the food-waste route first, then give tins, jars and containers a quick rinse before putting them loose in the blue bin.
No clothes or textiles
Clothes and textiles do not belong in Hull’s blue bin. Use a textile, charity, reuse or HWRC route instead.
If your blue bin is rejected
Remove the wrong items before the next recycling day. The PDF says Hull tells you the problem, but the bin owner is responsible for correcting the contents.
Weekly brown bin and outdoor food caddy collections
Hull’s 2026 rollout means most households now use weekly brown-bin or outdoor food-caddy collections. If you are on a brown-bin round, Hull says you are unable to have a separate food bin because the vehicle cannot lift it.

Black bin: what belongs there, charges and extra-capacity rules
The black bin is for non-recyclable household waste. Hull says black bins are emptied every 2 weeks, no black-bin side waste is collected, and heavy bins cannot be emptied safely.

Black bins are emptied every 2 weeks according to the date shown in the household collections checker.
Replacement/additional black bin charge
Hull’s current official page lists black bins as chargeable at £37.29. Check the form before ordering because charges can change.
Additional black bin
You can only request an additional black bin if 6 or more people permanently live in the household and you are already recycling as much as possible, or if Hull agrees a specific medical need.
Energy from waste
Hull says black-bin waste is taken to an Energy from Waste plant where some metals and plastic bottles are removed before remaining waste is burned to generate electricity.
Missed bin in Hull: exact reporting window and side-waste limits
Hull’s missed-bin rule is strict: report after 4pm on collection day and within 2 working days of the original collection day. If your street is already listed as missed, do not raise another report.

New, replacement, additional and removed bins
Use Hull’s new/replacement/removal route for damaged bins, lost or stolen bins, bin-size swaps, extra bins for large families or medical needs, and removing a bin from your home.
While waiting for a new bin
If a new or replacement bin has been ordered and you pay Council Tax while living at the property, Hull allows up to 4 bags of general waste and unlimited recycling bags on collection day until bins are delivered.
No green-waste bags
Hull does not collect bags filled with green waste while you wait for bins because they contaminate the brown-bin waste vehicle. Use an HWRC instead.
Delivery/removal access
Bin delivery and removal can take place between 7am and 5pm on the date given. You do not need to be home, but Hull cannot deliver to or remove bins from tenfoots.
New-build properties
Hull says bins are delivered free to new-build properties after the property is registered for Council Tax and Waste Management is notified.
Assisted collections when you cannot move bins
Hull offers assisted wheeled-bin collections for black, blue and brown bins if you cannot present your bin and nobody aged 16 or over lives at the property who can help.
Who may need it
Hull lists short-term or long-term medical conditions, poor mobility and pregnancy as examples of reasons someone may need help.
Access must be clear
Bins must be stored somewhere easily accessible. Locks, steps, gates, pets or blocked routes can prevent collection.
Unlock gates from 7am
Gates should be left unlocked from 7am on the scheduled collection day and bins should not be blocked by objects.
If access fails
If the crew attends but cannot access the property or bins, Hull says they will not return and the bins will be emptied on the next collection day.
Bulky waste: free annual collection, chargeable DIY items and set-out rules
Use bulky collection when an item is too large for a bin and cannot be donated, reused or taken to a recycling centre. Hull’s guidance says households in the Hull city boundary get one free collection of up to five single items per 12-month period.

Hull says one free collection can include up to 5 single items in a 12-month period, including many household appliances, furniture and items such as toys or lawnmowers.
Extra collections
Additional bulky collections are available for a minimum £5 charge, but some DIY items always have extra charges even where a household has a free collection available.
DIY item charges
Hull lists separate charges for DIY items such as radiators, boilers, flooring, bathroom suites, doors, worktops, fencing, sheds, greenhouses and pianos.
Collection-point rule
Items must be accessible from 7am on the booked day, inside the property boundary, together, identifiable, covered from rain where needed, and not placed in tenfoots.
Household waste recycling centres, permits and asbestos
Hull has 3 household waste and recycling centres. They are for Hull residents’ household waste, not business, trade or commercial waste. A resident pass or proof of Hull address may be needed.
Resident pass or proof
Display a resident pass in your car window. If you have not received, lost or forgotten it, Hull says you can show proof such as a recent utility bill, Council Tax bill or driving licence.
Van or large trailer permit
You need a free permit for vans under 3.5 tonnes, pickups, and trailers greater than 6ft by 4ft or with more than a single axle. Permits are restricted to 12 visits per household per year.
Booked slot
Electronic permits are linked to booking slots. Hull recommends booking ahead, although same-day slots may be available.
No trade waste
Landlords, businesses, trades and commercial waste users cannot use household recycling centres for trade disposal.
