Do not report too early. Stockport recommends waiting until after 6pm on collection day so crews have time to finish the route.

Too early to report
If it is still before 6pm, wait. The collection crew may still be working in your area.
Common reasons bins are not emptied
Weather, vehicle breakdown, roadworks, parked cars, late presentation, open lid, heavy rubble, soil, contamination or a wrong item can all stop collection.
If the bin is contaminated
Remove the wrong waste and put the bin out on the next scheduled collection day, or arrange bin decontamination where Stockport offers that route.
If your whole street was missed
Check the official missed-bin page first. If Stockport already knows about a missed street, the page may tell you when the bin will be collected.
Stockport garden waste permit: what it costs and who needs it
The green bin is the most confusing Stockport bin because food waste can still be collected without a garden permit, but garden waste needs a paid permit.
Standard 2026/27 permit
The garden waste permit costs £59 per green bin for the service year from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. The price does not reduce if you buy later.
Council Tax Support price
If you receive Council Tax Support, the first permit can cost £39. The discount does not include single person discount, and extra permits are charged at the full price.
Payment and evidence
You need debit or credit card details. American Express is not accepted. If using the reduced price, prepare your claim reference and proof of benefit award.
House-based permit
The permit is registered to the property. If you move within Stockport, check whether the new property already has a valid permit on its green bin.

Green bin and food caddies: free use vs permit use
This is the section most Stockport residents get wrong. Food waste is separate from paid garden waste, even though both can involve the green-bin system.
Food waste does not need a garden permit
Fruit and vegetable peelings, bread, cakes, tea bags, coffee grounds, plate scrapings, eggs, dairy, meat, bones and fish can use the food-waste route.
Garden waste needs a paid permit
Grass cuttings, leaves, twigs, hedge clippings, plants and small cut branches can go in the green bin only when a valid garden waste permit is displayed.
Branch size rule
Branches and real Christmas trees must be cut to fit inside the bin with the lid closed. Branches must not be more than 10cm in diameter or thicker than your wrist.
Compostable liners
Stockport says suitable liners should show the EN13432 composting logo. Rolls can also be collected for free at any Stockport Library.
Flats, apartments and shared-bin properties
Flats can have different containers, shared bin stores and property-management issues. Do not assume a house-style wheelie-bin rule always applies.

Stockport says shared bins in flats and apartments may have stickers showing recycling changes. Use the sticker and building instructions before guessing.

A postcard may be delivered to flats to explain recycling changes. Keep it near the bin store or shared noticeboard.

Blocked access problems
If the crew cannot access shared bins because of parked vehicles, locked bin stores, dumped waste or blocked gates, the collection may fail.

Large items, rubble, soil and building waste should not be forced into normal bins or left beside them. Use bulky collection, garden/building collection, or a Greater Manchester recycling centre.
