Whetstone Leicester HWRC: Opening Times, Booking, Waste Rules & Charges

Plan a visit to Whetstone Recycling and Household Waste Site without arriving on a closed day, using the wrong vehicle, bringing an unaccepted item or missing a required permit. This guide covers current opening hours, booking rules, vans and trailers, DIY charges, paint, asbestos, business waste, accepted materials, queue tips and the Enderby Road location.

Quick answer

Do you need to book Whetstone Recycling Centre?

No timed appointment is required for a normal household visit in a standard car. Visit during the published opening hours and follow site staff instructions.

You do need a free waste permit when using certain vans, pick-ups or trailers, or when bringing cement-bonded asbestos or household liquid paint.

Important Leicester distinction Whetstone is a Leicestershire County Council facility. Leicester City residents should normally use Leicester City Council recycling centres rather than relying on a county permit.
Current published schedule

Whetstone Recycling Centre opening times

The times below were displayed by Leicestershire County Council when this guide was checked on 26 June 2026. Seasonal hours, severe weather, container capacity and operational problems can create temporary changes.

Day Current published opening time Trip advice
Monday 9am–5pm The council states queues are less likely on Mondays.
Tuesday Closed Use another open Leicestershire site if disposal cannot wait.
Wednesday Closed Do not travel without checking another site’s schedule.
Thursday 9am–7pm Arrive earlier if separating several waste types.
Friday 9am–7pm Allow additional time before weekends and holidays.
Saturday 9am–5pm Weekends are normally among the busiest periods.
Sunday 9am–5pm Pre-sort the vehicle to reduce unloading time.

Arrive before the final minutes

The council advises arriving at least 10 minutes before closing. Arrive earlier with a large load or several waste types.

Every vehicle must leave on time

All vehicles must be off the site by the published closing time, not simply inside the gate.

Temporary closures can happen

Heat, weather, staffing, full containers or site servicing can change hours or stop acceptance of an individual material.

Check on the day

Open the official site page immediately before leaving, especially on bank-holiday weekends.

How to prepare for Whetstone HWRC step by step

Following this order helps prevent a refused load, unexpected payment, permit problem or unsafe unloading.

1

Confirm that Whetstone is the correct council site

Whetstone serves Leicestershire county residents. Leicester City residents should check Gypsum Close or Freemen’s Common through Leicester City Council.

Check Leicester City recycling centres
2

Check the opening day and same-day status

Confirm the site is open and that your material is currently being accepted. Individual containers can temporarily become unavailable.

Open the live Whetstone page
3

Decide whether your vehicle or waste needs a permit

Appointments are not required, but vans, pick-ups, larger trailers, asbestos and liquid paint have permit rules.

Check and apply for a permit
4

Separate the load before travelling

Keep cardboard, garden waste, wood, electricals, metal, plasterboard and rubble separate. Mixed loads take longer and can prevent correct recycling.

Check an individual item
5

Bring safe footwear and prepare to unload yourself

Wear footwear and preferably gloves. Staff assistance cannot be guaranteed, so do not bring an item you cannot safely unload.

Booking versus permit

Whetstone tip booking rules explained

The word “booking” causes confusion. Whetstone does not currently require an appointment slot for an ordinary household visit, but certain trips require a temporary permit before arrival.

Your visit Appointment needed? Waste permit needed?
Standard car with ordinary household waste No timed appointment listed. Normally no.
Van, pick-up or goods vehicle No timed slot, subject to site rules. Yes.
Car with trailer at least 1.37m long No timed slot. Yes.
Cement-bonded asbestos No normal booking slot. Yes, plus preparation and charge rules.
Household liquid paint, thinners or white spirit No standard appointment. Yes; Whetstone is the designated site, subject to capacity.
Business or commercial waste Use the adjacent transfer-station process. Household-site permits do not authorise trade waste.

Permit facts: temporary permits are free, valid for one selected site for 14 days, registered to one person and vehicle, non-transferable and emailed before the chosen start date.
