How to put Wigan bins out so crews can empty them
A bin can be missed or rejected even on the correct day if it is overloaded, in the wrong place, contaminated, not numbered, obstructing the pavement or not out early enough.
- Put the correct bin out by the published morning deadline. Use 6:30am as Wigan’s main guidance, but earlier is safer because the report form has displayed 5:45am wording.
- Do not put bins out earlier than 6pm the evening before unless you have assisted collection or a specific written arrangement.
- Place bins at the edge of your property boundary or agreed collection point.
- Face handles towards the road.
- Keep the lid closed flat. Do not overload the bin or make it too heavy.
- Do not leave extra bags beside the bin or on top of it unless Wigan has specifically agreed.

If your street is listed, leave the bin at the usual collection point and do not report it again. Wigan says listed streets will be collected as soon as possible, including Saturday if necessary.
Wait until after 8pm
Crews may still be completing rounds earlier in the day. If you report too early, the form may stop you or the request may not be valid.
Check whether the miss was your own presentation issue
Do not report as missed if the bin was late, too heavy, contaminated, wrong colour, not accessible or blocked by parked vehicles or road access issues.
Report within 48 hours if it was genuinely missed
If your street is not listed, it is after 8pm, and your bin was presented correctly, use Wigan’s official missed-bin form.
After reporting, put it out from the following Monday
Wigan says that after a successful missed-bin report, you should put the bin out from the following Monday before 6:30am and they will return one of the days that week.

Contaminated bin sticker: what it means and what to do
A contaminated bin means wrong items were found in the bin. Wigan says the bin should not be put out again until the incorrect waste has been removed.

Read the tag first. It tells you why the crew did not empty the bin and what needs to be removed before the next scheduled collection.
Remove the wrong items
Take out contamination and put each item into the correct bin, recycling centre route, bulky waste route or special disposal route.
Wait for the next normal collection
Wigan’s policy says crews do not normally return before the next scheduled collection for that waste stream when a bin has been rejected due to contamination.
Repeated contamination can escalate
Repeated contaminated bins can lead to advice, Section 46 notices and possible enforcement. Landlords can also face charges for contaminated bins at rental properties.
Food caddies and green bin rules
Wigan supplies food caddy liners free of charge to borough residents, but the liner must be compostable. Plastic bags and black bin liners should not be used in the food caddy or green bin.
Food allowed
Raw and cooked meat or fish, bones, bread, pastries, cheese, eggshells, pasta, rice, fruit, vegetables, tea and coffee grounds, plate scrapings and leftovers.
Garden waste allowed
Grass, leaves, weeds, flowers, twigs and small branches under 15cm diameter.
Not allowed
Milk, yoghurt, cream, liquids, cooking oil, soil, rubble, food packaging, cardboard, plastic bags, black bin liners, large branches, timber, animal bedding and cat litter.
How to get more liners
Tie a liner around the handle of your green bin when leaving food waste out for collection. Wigan says a new roll should be left at your property.
Replacement bins, new bins and extra capacity
Use this section if your bin is missing, damaged, not delivered, too small, or you need extra capacity. Prices and delivery times can vary between pages and forms, so verify the final charge before paying.

Bulky waste collections in Wigan
Bulky waste is for large household items that cannot go in your normal bins. Wigan asks residents to consider reuse, donation or selling first if items are still usable.
Cost and allowance
Wigan lists two free collections of up to five bulky waste items per property in a 12-month period. Extra collections cost £27 for up to five items.
Booking window
Bookings are available five weeks in advance if the system is not fully booked. Slots are released daily on a rolling basis.
Collection-day setup
Items must be covered, outside by 6am, clearly identifiable, accessible to the crew, and only the booked items should be presented.
Not bulky collection
Black bags, normal household waste, bricks, rubble, tiles, glass, wood, sheds, soil, gas bottles, hazardous chemicals, asbestos, paint tins and car parts are not collected as bulky waste.
When to use a recycling centre instead of a bin
Use a recycling centre when the item cannot go in kerbside bins, is too large, is extra waste that cannot wait, or needs a specialist route such as electrical recycling.

Assisted bin collections
Assisted collection is for residents who have problems moving bins on collection day and do not have someone in the household who can put the bin out.
Who may qualify
Residents with disabilities or additional needs may request help. Wigan says the service is free for people who qualify, and eligibility may be checked by a council officer.
