Black or green bin
Use for: non-recyclable household waste, such as crisp wrappers, polystyrene, pet bedding, vacuum contents, plastic bags, solidified paint tins and cooled cooking oil in a sealed container.
Do not use for: gas bottles, canisters, soil, rubble, extra side waste or recyclable material.
Blue bin

South Lanarkshire garden waste permit 2026/27
The garden waste permit is for garden waste in the burgundy bin. It does not affect free food-waste collection.
What the permit gives you
Garden waste collection every two weeks between 1 April 2026 and 31 March 2027, excluding two weeks over Christmas and New Year.
Sticker placement
Attach the permit sticker to the back of the burgundy bin, below the handles. If the sticker is not displayed, garden waste will not be collected.
Permit delivery
The council posts the permit within 14 days. If it has not arrived after 14 days, use the council enquiry form.
No permit?
Garden waste in a burgundy bin without a permit will not be collected. Food waste will still be collected free of charge.

Red tag, overfull bin or wrong contents: fix it before next collection
A tagged bin is not the same as a missed bin. It usually means the crew found something wrong with the contents or presentation.

Food waste and garden waste can both involve the burgundy bin, but the rules are different. Food waste collection is free; garden waste needs a permit.

All South Lanarkshire households can receive free food waste collections using a burgundy bin.
Flats may share bins
For flatted properties, the council usually provides a shared food waste bin unless there is enough space for individual bins.
Start-up timing
After a request is processed, collections may take up to 4 weeks to start. Bin deliveries can take up to 12 weeks.

Use biodegradable bags for food waste. Keep lids closed to reduce flies, smells and maggot problems.
