Your Birmingham bin day, disruption and 2026 change checker
Use this guide to check Birmingham City Council bin collection dates, understand the current strike disruption, follow 2026 schedule changes, report a missed bin and choose the correct official route.
This page is built for residents who need an answer quickly: which bin goes out, when to report, what number to call, what to do with recycling, and what changes when your food-waste service starts.
Start here: what should you do today?
Birmingham waste collections are affected by industrial action and phased service changes. The official checker and any letter sent to your exact address are more reliable than an old printed calendar, neighbour’s date or social-media post.
I need my Birmingham bin collection day
- Open the official collection-day checker.
- Enter your postcode and select the exact property.
- Read the collection date and any disruption message.
- Save the bin type, not only the weekday.
My grey-lid bin was not collected
- Check it was the correct scheduled day.
- Check it was out before 6am.
- Wait until after 1:30pm.
- Report it if Birmingham does not already know the round was missed.
I am confused by 2026 bin changes
- Do not copy another neighbourhood’s routine.
- Food waste and revised recycling are phased by address.
- Use new caddies only after your home gets them.
- Keep your council letter until the new pattern is normal.
I need the Birmingham bins phone number
- Use online forms first if possible.
- Call Waste and Recycling on 0121 303 1112.
- For complaints, Birmingham lists 0121 464 9995.
- Have postcode, bin type, date and report reference ready.
Birmingham bin collection quick helper
Choose your issue, bin type and timing. This tool is not live council data; it points you to the right official action and prevents the most common reporting mistakes.
How to check Birmingham bin collection days by address
Use the official postcode and address checker. Birmingham is not a simple one-calendar city during disruption and phased service changes.
Enter the postcode
Use the council collection checker and enter the full postcode for the property. Do not rely on a nearby street because rounds can differ by address.
Select the exact property
Choose the flat, house, block or numbered property shown in the result. If the address does not appear, use the waste phone number rather than guessing.
Read the disruption panel
The checker may show more than a date. During industrial action, it can also tell you what not to present, such as blue-lid recycling.
Check again after a service-change letter
If your household receives new caddies, a second recycling bin or a schedule-change letter, re-check the official page and update your reminder.
Current Birmingham waste service board
This is the practical status board for residents. Always use the official links for final action because industrial action and phased rollout can change quickly.
| Service | Current practical status | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Grey-lid household waste | Present on the normal address-specific day. | Put out before 6am. If missed, leave it out while the council can rearrange collection. |
| Blue-lid recycling | Official current advice says collections are suspended during industrial action. | Do not present unless your address has a newer restart/new-service instruction. |
| Food waste | Pilot and phased rollout. | Use the grey indoor caddy and brown outdoor caddy only after your household receives them and instructions. |
| Garden waste | Official page says suspended until further notice. | Compost at home or use a booked household recycling centre route where suitable. |
| Bulky waste | Industrial-action FAQ says suspended until further notice. | Check the official bulky-waste page before preparing items or paying. |
| Assisted and clinical collections | Listed as priority services during industrial action. | Use the assisted or clinical waste route, not the normal missed-bin form. |
2026 and 2027 collection changes: what actually changes?
Birmingham’s redesigned service is being introduced in phases. The main mistake is starting a new routine before your household is told to do so.
Weekly food waste collection
Selected pilot households received a 7 litre grey indoor caddy and a 23 litre brown outdoor caddy. Wider city rollout is planned in phases between June 2026 and March 2027.
Second recycling container
Birmingham says the transformed service includes a second recycling bin. Where homes have two recycling wheelie bins, the green-lid bin is for paper and card, and the blue-lid bin is for plastic, metal and glass.
Alternating fortnightly pattern
The new system changes how often household waste and recycling are collected. Do not move to fortnightly routines until your address receives confirmation.
Your household letter matters
The council says it will communicate with residents so households know what is happening on their street and when. Keep the letter until your new routine is working.
Missed Birmingham bin: report it only when eligible
A missed-bin report can be rejected if the council already knows the round was not completed, the bin was contaminated, or the bin was not out before 6am.
| Situation | What it means | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| It is before 1:30pm on collection day | Too early for a general-waste missed-bin report. | Wait until after 1:30pm, then check the report form. |
| The bin went out after 6am | The crew may have already passed. | Put it out before 6am next time. CCTV may be used to verify presentation. |
| The whole road was missed | The council may already know about the round issue. | Check the form or BRUM account route before submitting a duplicate report. |
| The bin was tagged or contaminated | Wrong items can stop collection. | Remove incorrect waste or clean and separate recycling before the next collection. |
| Not collected within 2 working days | The official missed-bin guidance says to take it back if it is still not collected. | Return it to your property and present it on the next collection day of that type. |
Prepare the report details
Have your postcode, full address, bin type, scheduled collection date, presentation time and any photos or report reference ready.
Log in if the form asks
Birmingham may ask you to log in to or create a free BRUM account before checking whether the missed collection is already known.
Leave it out only while a return is possible
If the council can rearrange collection, leave the bin out. If it is not collected within 2 working days, take it back and use the next collection day.
How to put Birmingham bins out correctly
Correct presentation protects you from a rejected collection and helps avoid street-obstruction problems.
- Put the correct bin or caddy out before 6am on collection day.
- Do not put bins out earlier than 3:30pm the day before.
- Place bins at the front of your home unless Birmingham has told you a different collection point.
- Return bins to your property by midday the day after collection.
- Do not store bins permanently on the street.
- Do not leave extra rubbish bags beside a wheelie bin unless official industrial-action advice allows reasonable side waste.
- Keep pavements, dropped kerbs, alleyways and bin-store access clear.
- Use assisted collection if no one in the household can move the bin safely.
Which Birmingham bin or route should you use?
This section avoids the “wrong bin” problem. During current disruption, treat recycling rules carefully because normal blue-lid collection may be suspended unless your address has newer instructions.
| Container or route | Use for | Keep out |
|---|---|---|
| Grey-lid household waste bin | Non-recyclable household rubbish. During current disruption, put it out on your normal address-specific day. | Recyclables, asbestos, soil, rubble, garden waste, bulky waste, electricals, batteries, wood and metal. |
| Blue-lid recycling bin | Under normal recycling service, plastic, metal and glass go in the main bin section; older systems may include a pod for paper/card. | Do not present during current suspension unless your address has newer restart instructions. |
| Green-lid recycling bin | Where a second recycling wheelie bin has been issued, Birmingham says green-lid is for paper and card. | Do not use it until your address has received the bin and start instructions. |
| Food waste caddy | Food scraps only after your household receives the grey indoor caddy, brown outdoor caddy and instructions. | Packaging, plastic, non-food rubbish and contaminated caddy contents. |
| Household Recycling Centre | Extra recycling, bulky items, garden waste, electricals, rubble and waste not suitable for normal bins. | Do not travel without checking booking, vehicle and accepted-waste rules. |
Food waste caddies: pilot, rollout and missed caddy rules
Food waste is one of the biggest 2026 changes. Start only when your household has been selected or receives rollout instructions.
Indoor kitchen caddy
Pilot households received a 7 litre grey indoor kitchen caddy. Use it for food scraps and empty it into the outdoor caddy.
Outdoor food caddy
Pilot households received a 23 litre brown outdoor food caddy and a sticker for labelling. Keep the lid closed and locked to reduce pests and smells.
Weekly collection
Food waste collections are weekly for pilot households and are collected on the same day as the grey-lid household waste bin.
What happens after collection
Birmingham says food waste is taken to an anaerobic digestion facility near Birmingham, where it can produce biogas and fertiliser after contamination is removed.
Extra bags, cardboard and side waste during disruption
Normal bin rules and strike-disruption rules can look different. Read the current official advice before placing extra waste out.
| Waste type | Normal practical rule | Disruption note |
|---|---|---|
| Extra black rubbish bags | Birmingham’s bin page says extra rubbish bags left next to a wheelie bin will not be collected. | Industrial-action FAQ says reasonable side waste may be collected during strike action. Keep it neat, bagged and pest-resistant. |
| Cardboard | Break or fold large boxes so crews can fit them in recycling vehicles. | Missed-bin guidance says cardboard left neatly beside the recycling bin is always collected at the next collection if there is too much waste. |
| Recycling | Use the correct recycling container once your service is active. | Current advice says blue-lid recycling is suspended unless your address has newer instructions. |
| Food waste | Use caddies only after your household receives them. | Pilot/rollout households should report untagged missed caddies through the normal missed-bin route. |
Bank holiday bin collections in Birmingham
During 2026 industrial action and rollout changes, do not rely on a generic “one day later” bank-holiday rule. Check your exact address near the holiday.
Check the official address result
Use the collection checker close to the bank holiday because disruption, rota changes and service rollout may affect the usual pattern.
Ask someone to manage bins if you are away
Do not leave bins out for a long holiday period. Ask a neighbour, family member or housemate to present and return them at the right time.
Use the right alternative for overflow
If rubbish builds up, consider a booked Household Recycling Centre slot or mobile household waste centre rather than leaving loose waste outside.
When normal bin collection is not enough
Use these routes for waste that should not sit beside your wheelie bin or go into the grey-lid bin.
Household Recycling Centres
Birmingham lists Household Recycling Centres as an alternative for extra waste and materials not suitable for kerbside bins. Most visits need a booking; check vehicle rules before travelling.
Mobile Household Waste Centres
Birmingham’s 2 mobile centres visit locations across the city for one morning at a time. Visits take place between 7:30am and 1:00pm, with 10 different places each week.
Bulky waste
Birmingham’s industrial-action FAQ says bulky-waste collections are suspended until further notice. Check the live bulky-waste page before preparing items or expecting a booking.
Garden waste
The official garden-waste page says the service is suspended until further notice. Use composting or a booked recycling-centre route where suitable.
Flats, HMOs, students and shared bins
Shared-bin properties often have different practical problems: blocked bin rooms, wrong waste in communal containers, people moving out and no one knowing the collection day.
Flats and bin stores
Keep bin-store access clear. If the crew cannot safely reach or move the containers, the collection may fail even if the correct day is shown.
HMOs and shared houses
Put the next grey-lid collection date in a shared place. Assign one person to check disruption notices and bring bins back after collection.
Students moving out
Do not leave mattresses, furniture or bags on the pavement at the end of tenancy. Use recycling centres, mobile centres, donation routes or the official bulky-waste status page.
Overflow around shared bins
Loose rubbish around communal bins can attract pests and can be treated as fly-tipping. Bag waste securely and use an official route for bulky or hazardous items.
Phone numbers, complaints and what to say
Use the missed-bin form first for a single eligible missed collection. Use phone or complaint routes when the issue is repeated, unresolved, inaccessible online or needs a service-level response.
Waste and recycling phone number
Birmingham’s official useful-numbers page lists 0121 303 1112 for Rubbish, Waste and Recycling.
Complaints number
The same official page lists 0121 464 9995 for complaints, compliments and comments.
Accessible contact
Birmingham lists SignLive BSL support and says people who are deaf, hard of hearing or have speech impairment can use Text Relay by dialling 18001 before the full national number.
Before you call
Prepare your full address, postcode, bin type, scheduled date, whether it was out before 6am, BRUM account/report reference and what outcome you need.
Assisted, clinical, hazardous and commercial waste
These services should not be handled through a normal bin-day or missed-bin route.
| Need | Who it is for | Correct action |
|---|---|---|
| Assisted collection | Residents who cannot move bins and have no one aged 16+ in the household who can help. | Use the assisted collection route and keep access clear. |
| Clinical waste | Residents advised by healthcare professionals that specialist collection is needed. | Use clinical waste collection; do not place sharps or clinical waste in normal bins. |
| Hazardous waste or asbestos | Paint, chemicals, asbestos, gas cylinders or dangerous materials. | Use Birmingham’s hazardous/asbestos guidance or a licensed specialist route. |
| Commercial or landlord waste | Waste from shops, traders, landlords, contractors or paid work. | Use commercial waste services, not household bins or normal resident routes. |
